Overview
From birth to death, social relationships are at the core of human experience. Humans are social animals whose lives are powerfully shaped by their relationships with friends, family, teachers, co-workers, and many others. Currently, a new interdisciplinary science of relationships is emerging that draws on many intellectual traditions, uses an array of increasingly sophisticated research designs and methods, and seeks to integrate knowledge across different levels of analysis.

Relationship Science Research at UCLA

The number of relationship researchers at UCLA is unmatched. Composed of eminent leaders as well as rising young investigators, the researchers sit at the forefront of research in relationship science. With strong historical roots and traditions, many of UCLA's faculty members have been pioneers in the development of relationship science during the past 25 years. Collectively, UCLA represents the most advanced theortical thinking and empirical investigations in the field of relationship science.

What is IRSP?

Funded since 2005 by the National Science Foundation IGERT Program, the UCLA Interdisciplinary Relationship Science Program (IRSP) fosters the training of students in anthropology, education, psychology and sociology for careers as research scientists studying social relationships from a multidisciplinary perspective. IRSP hosts a number of programs.

The IRSP Graduate Training Program provides financial support and interdisciplinary training to students pursuing doctoral degrees in our four core departments (anthropology, education, psychology, & sociology). Through coursework, an interdisciplinary internship, and other activities, IRSP provides predoctoral trainees with the theoretical foundation to study complex interpersonal relationship processes and the tools to conduct state-of-the-art research. IRSP fosters students' professional skills to collaborate effectively across disciplines, to disseminate their work to diverse audiences, and to succeed in research-oriented careers.

Other doctoral students gain interdisciplinary research training through the IRSP Graduate Certificate Program in Relationship Science. Through coursework and participation in IRSP activities, these graduate affiliates complete the equivalent of an graduate "minor" in interdisciplinary relationship science.

The future of relationship science depends on encouraging talented undergraduates from diverse backgrounds to pursue graduate education. IRSP supports an Undergraduate Research Internship Program for UCLA students and a Summer Research Internship Program that brings students from other colleges and universities to UCLA to work with IRSP faculty

IRSP also hosts and co-sponsors speakers and conferences that highlight the work of UCLA researchers and bring to campus distinguished relationship scholars from the U.S. and abroad.
