How to Apply for IRSP Undergraduate Programs
IRSP Research Internships for UCLA Undergraduate Students

UCLA undergraduates are eligible to become IRSP Research Interns working on research projects related to the study of personal relationships. Internships must be for at least two quarters. During the acdemic year 2007-2008, undergraduate interns will receive a stipend of $500 per quarter for winter and spring quarters.

Students enrolled in the IRSP Undergraduate Internship will also attend mentorship and career development events sponsored by IRSP. For more information on program requirements, click here.

Undergraduates cannot apply directly to become IRSP interns. Instead, applications must be submitted by the IRSP faculty member or graduate student trainee who will be the intern's primary research advisor. Interested UCLA undergraduates should follow these steps:

  1. Contact IRSP faculty and/or graduate trainees to learn about possible research opportunities. Visit the IRSP faculty and graduate trainee pages on this site for contact information and summaries of their research interests.
  2. Arrange to work with an IRSP faculty member and/or graduate trainee on a research project concerning social relationships for at least two academic quarters.
  3. Ask your research advisor (faculty or graduate trainee) to apply for you to become an IRSP Undergraduate Research Intern. The application process is simple.
  4. To apply, your research advisor should email the IRSP Program Coordinator, Youssef Boroumand, and complete a very brief application form.
  5. Due to NSF regulations, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for funding.

***For the academic year 2008-2009, undergraduate interns will be funded for winter and spring quarters. The review of requests from faculty and graduate student trainees will begin September 1, 2008.***

IRSP Summer Research Internships for non-UCLA Undergraduate Students

Students interested in working with an IRSP faculty member through the UCLA SPUR summer program should follow these steps as soon as possible:

  1. Check that you meet all of the eligibility requirements of the IRSP program and of the SPUR program. These include being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, having a cumulative minimum GPA of at least 3.0, and entering your junior or senior year during the 2008-2009 academic year. For SPUR deadlines and additional eligibility requirements, check the SPUR website.
  2. Identify possible IRSP faculty mentors at UCLA who conduct research on social relationships. This should be done as soon as possible and before the SPUR deadline.
  3. Contact possible UCLA faculty mentors to check on the availability of research opportunities in summer 2007. When you email faculty, be sure to tell them that you will be applying to the SPUR program and would receive summer funding for 8 weeks from IRSP.
  4. If you need help in identifying a faculty mentor, email Professor Anne Peplau, IRSP Director.
  5. Apply directly to the SPUR program by their deadline (usually in January). Mention IRSP in your SPUR application. At the same time, notify the IRSP Program Coordinator that you will be applying and give the name of the faculty member you would like to work with. This will enable us to review your application more quickly.
  6. Due to NSF regulations, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for funding.

For questions or additional information, please email the IRSP Program Coordinator or Director.
