Research:
My primary research interests involve the use of physical space (indoor and outdoor) in educational settings and its effects on interpersonal relationships as well as socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes at school. Some of my specific goals are to examine classroom seating arrangements and group behavior, particularly for students from crowded homes, neighborhoods, and schools; cafeteria seating arrangements and segregation/integration in ethnically diverse schools; and economic diversity and friendship formation during free play. I am currently working on the UCLA Peer Project, a longitudinal study of peer relationships across the transition from middle school to high school, as well as a pilot study of seating patterns and segregation in middle school. My other research interests include family processes that vary by family structure and how the use of space inside the home impacts family relationships.
