Research:
My current research investigates intergenerational family relations over the life course. Some of my work has focused on the earlier part of the life course, specifically, child wellbeing. In particular, I studied whether parent-child ties and social support, both inside and outside the household, explain the association between family structure and children's behavior and achievement. More recently, I have become interested in later life, and am working on a couple of projects examining intergenerational transfers from adult children to their older parents. My recent work includes an analysis of the between- and within-family characteristics of widowed mothers who live with their children, and a study of the effects of children's educational attainment on middle-aged and older parents' mortality. For my IRSP internship, I am moving beyond both intergenerational relations and traditional demographic data and am working with Teresa Seeman (medicine) to investigate the effect of social relationships on biomarkers of health in midlife.
